The Freytag's Pyramid Revised
Compared to the original Freytag's pyramid, our contemporary pyramid is quite different.
First, we moved the Reversal to take place before the climax. Frodo's realization how corrupted he has become early on in his journey reveals one of the key traits as a tragic hero. The climax of his journey does not come until the end of the trilogy, and yet, even though he realizes he is corrupted, he cannot do anything to reverse it or stop it.
Another component we edited was the catastrophe as the tones of death and destruction take place before the destroying of the the ring, not after it, and thus, the climax does not trigger a catastrophe but rather peace. Its definition to also invoke a sense of catharsis in the audience is an outdated notion for the audience becomes so desensitized to suffering not only due to the violence in the movie but also the generation in which the audience has lived. In Frodo's story, the destruction which takes place is not only physical, such as the great battle of Middle-earth, but also psychologically as following the climax, the moment of last suspense takes place, exposing the depth of the consequences of Frodo's burdens.
